The Action of Glycine on Bacterial Suspensions *

چکیده

In the course of some experimental work it was noticed that the addition of glycine to broth cultures or aqueous suspensions of bacteria resulted, after some hours, in the apparent lysis of the cells. Closer examination of the phenomenon revealed that the first visible action was an immediate increase in the turbidity of the cell suspension, depending in degree upon the concentration of the glycine. This initial turbidity increase was followed by a slow and progressive decrease in turbidity, until, after some hours, the cloudiness of the suspension, provided too many cells had not been added, had entirely vanished. With heavy suspensions of cells complete clarification is not obtained. Although Escherichia coli and Bacillus mesentericus have been used in most of the work, all of the species of bacteria examined have proved susceptible. Curiously, the pneumococcus lyses slowly, as is the rule with other species, and does not dissolve almost at once as it does in bile.

Investigation of Desulfurization Activity, Reusability, and Viability of Magnetite Coated Bacterial Cells

Background: Magnetic separation using magnetic nanoparticles can be used as a simple method to isolate desulfurizing bacteria from a biphasic oil/water system. Objectives: Magnetite nanoparticles were applied to coat the surface of Rhodococcus erythropolis IGTS8 and Rhodococcus erythropolis FMF desulfurizing bacterial cells, and the viability and...

Glycine formation during growth of Pseudomonas AM1 on methanol and succinate.

1. The mechanism of regeneration of glycine during the growth of Pseudomonas AM1 on C(1) compounds has been investigated by brief incubation of bacterial suspensions with [2,3-(14)C(2)]succinate and observing the incorporation of radioactivity into various metabolites. 2. With the wild-type organism growing on methanol, radioactivity appeared rapidly in glycine and tricarboxylic acid-cycle inte...

Contact angle changes induced by immunocomplex formation.

Immunoassays analyzing interactions between antigens and antibodies can be affected by capillary action together with binding affinity. This paper studies contact-angle changes of bacterial suspensions on antibody immobilized surfaces. The capillary action and the dried pattern of the bacterial suspensions are analyzed and correlated with specific- and nonspecific bindings between bacteria and ...
